Small Vacant Lot

An often overlooked area to explore is those vacant or empty roadside areas we all drive by every day. One such place that I enjoy visiting year after year exists here in Hudsonville, only a couple of miles from my home. As you leave the main road you pass by the largest Bur Oak tree in the city. Once the destination is reached it doesn’t look like much, but is a great place to see Tall Sunflowers, False Boneset, and asters. The large black and yellow orb spiders can easily be seen on webs in front of you as you walk through the grasses. Butterflies are also here and at the end of the opening, Red-tailed hawks nest in the spring.

We often miss the nature around us because we hurry through everyday life. Sometime stop and look around those overlooked little places you pass by every day. Maybe just sit or stand and watch for a few minutes and you just may be surprised at what you can find.
